Piketberg is a town in South Africa's Western Cape province. It is located in the Piketberg mountains, some 80 kilometers east of Saldanha Bay. The farm Grotefontein was donated to the Church Council in 1836, and thus the town was born.
Wheat growing is possible in the area surrounding the mountains. In contrast, the land on top of the mountains, which is cooler and often frost-free, is ideal for growing farm fruit and producing Rooibos Tea. Carl Otto Hager, the town's architect, created a massive Dutch Reformed Church in his signature neo-Gothic style.
Before the advent of Dutch, Huguenot, and German people in 1705-06, the Khoikhoi and the San occupied the area. In the mountains, there is still well-preserved San rock art. There used to be a small military garrison in town to safeguard farmers' livestock from Khoikhoi incursions.
Because of its proximity to the Mother City, Piketberg is expected to be the next 'boom town' in the Swartland. It is around an hour and a half from Cape Town and only 30 minutes from the Cape West Coast region.
To summarise, Piketberg is a town with a rich history and a bright future. Because of its position in the Western Cape, it is an excellent choice for visiting South Africa's natural beauty and cultural legacy.
